Patient Care
Neuromuscular diseases are a broad group of related disorders that represent a major cause of mortality and lifelong disability in children and adults. Most of the disorders are relatively rare. To guarantee that patients receive the best care, our centres not only need to have access to up-to-date knowledge but also need to have good consensus regarding the treatments.
Each centre has the expertise on multiple neuromuscular diseases. By sharing knowledge, working close together, and referring patients when needed, our centres combined are able to provide the wide range of care. In addition, the Netherlands Neuromuscular Centre coordinates the harmonization and optimization of guidelines for care across the centres. To make sure these guidelines are in agreement with patient needs, the patient group Spierziekten Nederland is an important partner.
Our centres of expertise are also part of a European network in which over 60 hospitals divided over 14 countries cooperate and share knowledge at the level of education, research, and patient care. This European Reference Network for Rare Neuromuscular Diseases (EURO-NMD) is active since 2017.
