Dr. Merelijne A. Zieren-Verschoof
After completing medical school at the University of Amsterdam, I did my residency in Neurology at Hagaziekenhuis in The Hague, gaining valuable expertise in diagnosing and treating neurological disorders in adult patients. However, my passion for Pediatric Neurology led me to further specialize in this field. I completed extensive training in Pediatric Neurology at two children’s hospitals, Juliana Kinderziekenhuis in The Hague and Sophia Kinderziekenhuis in Rotterdam. These training experiences exposed me to a diverse range of neurological conditions affecting children and adolescents, with a specific focus on neuromuscular diseases.
Currently, I work as a Pediatric Neurologist at LUMC Leiden. Our Pediatric Muscle center (“Kinderspiercentrum”) is a specialized center within LUMC dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of neuromuscular conditions in children and adolescents. During a one-day visit, the children are seen by a multidisciplinary team, including a pediatric neurologist, cardiologist, pulmonologist, rehabilitation specialist, orthopedist, physiotherapist, and a dietitian. At the end of the day, the results of the examinations are provided. Together with the other Pediatric Muscle centers we are working to the ultimate goal: earlier diagnosis and availability of treatment for all children with a neuromuscular disease.
